Learn / Staff reading

Read shapes before
spelling every note.

Strong readers do not restart a mnemonic for every symbol. They recognise a few landmarks, then read whether the music repeats, steps or skips.

01

Two staves, one keyboard

Piano music normally joins a treble staff and a bass staff with a brace. The treble staff often carries the higher part and the bass staff the lower part, but the clef does not assign a hand. Either hand can cross or read from either staff.

Find middle C on the keyboard first. In notation, middle C sits on a short ledger line between the two staves. It is the practical bridge between them.

02

Begin with three landmark notes

Treble GThe clef curls around its line

Second line from the bottom.

Middle CBetween the two staves

One short ledger line through the note.

Bass FThe clef dots surround its line

Second line from the top.

Use mnemonics as an occasional check, not the only reading method. A landmark should lead directly to a nearby note.

03

Read direction and distance

When two notes repeat, they occupy the same staff position. A step moves from a line to the next space or a space to the next line. A skip moves line to line or space to space. Read that shape before naming both notes.

At the keyboard

Place the right hand over C–G. Play C–D–E while looking at the hand, then draw or imagine three notes moving line–space–line. The visual distance matches a step.

04

Pitch can be right while the music is wrong

Before playing, identify the time signature and tap one measure. Count note starts, not just symbols. Repeated pitches in Jingle Bells are a good example: the hand barely moves, but the pulse must remain clear.

Practise pitch and rhythm separately, then combine them at a tempo where you can look ahead by one note.

05

A ten-minute reading routine

  1. 2 minutes: landmarks.Point to treble G, middle C and bass F on a fresh example.
  2. 2 minutes: shapes.Mark repeats, steps and skips without naming pitches.
  3. 2 minutes: rhythm.Tap and count one phrase away from the keyboard.
  4. 4 minutes: slow reading.Play once, keep moving, then fix the smallest broken group.
